On the Essex marshes, a young girl named Fritha brings an injured snow goose to Philip Rhayader, a solitary artist living in an abandoned lighthouse. As Rhayader nurses the bird back to health, the girl, the artist, and the returning goose form a bond across successive seasons. Their quiet friendship is transformed by the Second World War when Rhayader joins the civilian effort to rescue soldiers stranded at Dunkirk.
