Juliet Takes a Breath

After coming out to her family, Juliet Milagros Palante leaves the Bronx for a summer internship in Portland with a feminist writer she admires. The difficult response at home follows her west, and the internship complicates rather than settles her expectations. Through new relationships and communities, Juliet examines race, sexuality, feminism, family, and the limits of her hero's ideas. Her summer becomes a process of deciding which beliefs serve her and learning to define herself on her own terms.
