Sixteen-year-old Simon Spier has not told his family or friends that he is gay. When a classmate discovers Simon's anonymous emails with another boy, Simon is drawn into a scheme that threatens both his privacy and the identity of the person he has come to know online. While rehearsing for the school musical and trying to protect his friendships, Simon must decide how to respond without letting someone else control his story. The novel follows his search for the boy behind the emails and his path toward coming out on his own terms.
