Mia Thermopolis is a Manhattan teenager worried about school, friendship, and failing algebra when she learns that her father is the prince of Genovia and she is his only heir. The discovery brings lessons in royal conduct from her formidable grandmother, unwanted public attention, and pressure to leave her familiar life behind. Told through Mia's diary, the novel follows her effort to reconcile ordinary adolescence with a future she did not choose. The book launched Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries series and inspired the 2001 Disney film starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews.
