Fourteen-year-old Shawn McDaniel has cerebral palsy and cannot control his body or communicate what he understands. The people around him assume that his physical limitations define his inner life, while Shawn silently observes his family and experiences memories, humor, and seizures that no one else can fully interpret. His father has built a public role around disability advocacy, but Shawn begins to fear that his father's ideas about mercy may place him in danger. The story is narrated entirely from Shawn's inaccessible point of view.
