Death narrates the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster child growing up in Nazi Germany who begins stealing books before she can fully read them. With help from her accordion-playing foster father, words become a source of refuge and connection during book burnings, air raids, and the family's dangerous effort to shelter a Jewish man. As war closes around their town, Liesel learns how language can be used both to destroy lives and to sustain them. The novel is narrated with foreknowledge of loss while centering the relationships that make survival meaningful.
