About this work & edition details

In this memoir for teens, Jasminne Mendez reflects on growing up Afro Latina and Dominican American in the Deep South. Her essays examine language, race, culture, family, and the pressure to fit into narrow ideas of American identity while tracing how she learned to understand and claim the different parts of herself.
