About this work & edition details

New York Times bestselling author Amy Ewing delivers a dark and riveting tale that "will have fans of Oliver’s Delirium, Cass’s The Selection, and DeStefano’s Wither breathless.”* The Jewel has many meanings: wealth, beauty, royalty. But for Violet, the Jewel has always meant servitude. Born and raised in the Marsh, Violet is destined for the Jewel. She is trained as a surrogate for the elite and is bought by the Duchess of the Lake at auction. And she quickly learns that beneath the Jewel’s glittering façade lies the cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life. Violet must accept the ugly realities of her life...all while fighting for her survival. But before she can accept her fate, Violet meets a handsome boy who is also under the Duchess’s control. A forbidden love sparks. But their illicit affair has consequences, which will cost them both more than they bargained for. And toeing the line between being calculating and rebellious, Violet must decide what, and who, she is willing to risk for her own freedom. *BCCB

More About Amy Ewing

Amy Ewing came to writing after studying theater at New York University, then earning an MFA in Writing for Children at The New School. The Jewel began as her graduate thesis and became her debut novel, launching the Lone City trilogy and a career that now includes young-adult fantasy, contemporary romance, and freelance editing.

Ewing has said that she thinks of The Jewel as fantasy, even though it was marketed as dystopian fiction. Its speculative society gave her a way to approach ownership over one's body, while the series' planned structure let her follow a shy and frightened protagonist toward self-possession rather than beginning with a fully formed rebel.

Her approach to fantasy joins immersive world-building with character access. Ewing describes characters as the reader's gateway into an unfamiliar world, while plot reveals its rules and pressures. She traces her attraction to darkness and whimsy to formative reading and uses those elements to explore how teenagers negotiate fear, identity, and social constraint.

The Cerulean began as a brief festival-panel story answering the question of why the sky is blue, then expanded into a two-book fantasy concerned with family, belonging, gender, sexuality, and exclusion. Ewing's official bibliography places that duology alongside the Lone City books and her later adult romances, showing a body of work that changes genre while retaining an interest in how people build connection under pressure.
