More About Byron Graves
Byron Graves is an Ojibwe and Lakota author from the Red Lake Nation. His fiction draws on Indigenous community life and the intensity, relationships, and pressures surrounding youth sports.
His debut novel, Rez Ball, centers community and high-school basketball. Medicine Wheels turns to skateboarding for another Indigenous sports story, extending that interest through a different activity and a new group of young characters.
Published in 2023, Rez Ball won both the William C. Morris YA Debut Award and the American Indian Youth Literature Award in 2024. The honors recognized Graves's first novel and its place in contemporary literature for young readers.
