Ann Brashares

Lena, Tibby, Bridget, and Carmen are spending their first summer apart when they discover that one thrift-store pair of jeans somehow fits all four of them. They agree to send the pants from one friend to the next as each faces a different season of family upheaval, grief, risk, and first love. Their letters and shared ritual keep the group connected across the distance, but the summer also tests what their friendship can withstand. The novel begins the Sisterhood series and was adapted for film in 2005.

More About Ann Brashares

Ann Brashares grew up in and around Washington, DC, and lives in New York City. Before becoming a novelist, she studied philosophy and worked around books as an editor and ghostwriter, experience that preceded her move into writing fiction of her own.

Her debut, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, launched a five-book sequence about Lena, Tibby, Bridget, and Carmen. Brashares has described the books' emotional center as the friends' unconditional love and loyalty, while the novels use the traveling jeans to connect distinct stories of growing up, separation, grief, romance, and change.

Beyond the Sisterhood, Brashares has moved among adult novels, speculative young-adult fiction, and middle-grade alternate history. Her catalog includes My Name Is Memory, The Last Summer (of You and Me), The Here and Now, and the Westfallen trilogy written with her brother Ben Brashares, showing an ongoing interest in friendship, love, memory, and relationships tested by altered circumstances.
