About this work & edition details

Fifteen-year-old Daisy leaves New York to stay with relatives in the English countryside. Soon after her aunt travels abroad, an unnamed enemy attacks and the country descends into war. At first the isolated farm feels free of adult rules, and Daisy forms an intense bond with her cousin Edmond. Military control then separates the family and forces Daisy and young Piper into a dangerous journey through occupied territory. Told in Daisy's sharp, immediate voice, the novel follows the cousins' struggle to survive, reunite, and understand how war has changed their relationships and themselves.
