About this work & edition details

Jacob, aged 17, is abroad on his own for the time, visiting his grandfather's grave at the commemoration of the Second World War Battle of Arnhem in Holland. Jacob's life-changing experiences are interwoven with the extraordinary wartime story of passion and treachery that he learns from Geertrui, whose family is linked to Jacob's in a way he never suspected. The Originals are the pioneers of fiction for young adults. From political awakening, war and unrequited love to addiction, teenage pregnancy and nuclear holocaust, The Originals confront big issues and articulate difficult truths. More About Aidan Chambers

Aidan Chambers wrote novels, plays, and books about reading, while also working as a teacher and librarian. His official site places Postcards from No Man’s Land within the Dance Sequence and keeps the wider body of criticism and reading work alongside the fiction.

Chambers describes fiction as a moral structure and asks readers to make their own distinctions about how people behave. In his FAQ, he says he prepares for years , researches places closely, and lets a story change while he writes it.

Postcards from No Man’s Land received the Carnegie Medal and the Michael L. Printz Award . The official journalism archive preserves Chambers’s Printz acceptance speech, giving the recognition a first-person record.
