About this work & edition details

American Born Chinese interweaves three stories: Jin Wang's effort to fit in at a new school, the Monkey King's struggle against the limits placed on him, and the humiliating visits of Chin-Kee to his cousin Danny. The strands use myth, school comedy, and deliberately exaggerated stereotypes to examine racism, shame, friendship, and self-acceptance. As the apparent separation between the characters breaks down, Jin must confront what he has rejected about himself. Gene Luen Yang's graphic novel received the Michael L. Printz Award and later inspired the Disney+ series of the same name.
