Alix E. Harrow

Alix E. Harrow is a Kentucky-born fantasy writer whose novels and short stories use doors, witches, haunted houses, and retold fairy tales to ask who controls history and who gets to belong. A historian by training, she has described rediscovering Ursula K. Le Guin in graduate school as a reminder that fantasy and serious intellectual argument do not have to be separated.

Starling House gathers Harrow's mixed feelings about Kentucky into a contemporary Southern Gothic. She has traced the novel to family land, caves and sinkholes, John Prine's Paradise, and an abandoned house she and her husband restored before leaving the state. Its haunted and fairy-tale traditions let the house appear by turns threatening, unruly, and protective while the town around it exposes poverty, corporate power, racial history, and the stories communities use to hide their origins.

Harrow's range extends from novels to novellas and short fiction. Her award record includes the 2019 Hugo for the short story A Witch's Guide to Escape and the 2026 Hugo for the novel The Everlasting; interviews and podcast appearances show a continuing interest in crossing boundaries among fantasy, Gothic, horror, romance, and literary fiction.
