About this work & edition details

Twelve-year-old Maddie plans a secret overnight at her grandparents' empty apartment, telling each divorced parent that she is staying with the other. When she wakes, her Colorado town has been evacuated and no one knows she is still there. With communications cut off, Maddie must learn to find food, water, heat, and safety while caring for a neighbor's dog. The verse novel follows her through changing seasons as isolation, uncertainty, and the hope of reunion test her resourcefulness and resolve.
