About this work & edition details
After a plane crashes in Australia's Northern Territory, Mary and her younger brother Peter are left to cross the outback on foot. An Aboriginal boy traveling on walkabout finds them and teaches them how to locate food and water in the desert. Peter responds to him with trust, while Mary remains wary of the cultural distance between them. Their journey becomes both a survival story and an encounter between children whose assumptions about one another have serious consequences.
