Suzanne Collins

Suzanne Collins is the author of The Hunger Games and The Underland Chronicles. She began in children’s television, then imagined a world beneath New York City for Gregor’s adventures. Across the Underland and Panem, her stories explore why wars are fought and what violence does to those caught in them. Her novels draw on the three-part dramatic structure she learned as a playwright.

About this work & edition details

The first novel in the worldwide bestselling series by Suzanne Collins! Winning means fame and fortune. Losing means certain death. The Hunger Games have begun. . . . In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before-and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

About this work & edition details

The third book in the ground-breaking original Hunger Games trilogy. Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she's made it out of the bloody arena alive, she's still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what's worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss's family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. "Fans will be happy to hear that Mockingjay is every bit as complex and imaginative as Hunger Games and Catching Fire." Entertainment Weekly "Suspenseful... Collins' fans, grown-ups included, will race to the end." USA Today "At its best the trilogy channels the political passion of 1984, the memorable violence of A Clockwork Orange, the imaginative ambience of The Chronicles of Narnia and the detailed inventiveness of Harry Potter." New York Times Book Review "Unfolding in Collins' engaging, intelligent prose and assembled into chapters that end with didn't-see-that-coming cliffhangers, this finale is every bit the pressure cooker of its forebears. [Mockingjay] is nearly as shocking, and certainly every bit as original and thought provoking, as The Hunger Games. Wow."-Los Angeles Times "This concluding volume in Collins's Hunger Games trilogy accomplishes a rare feat, the last installment being the best yet, a beautifully orchestrated and intelligent novel that succeeds on every level." Publishers Weekly Three books, four films and one worldwide phenomenon, The Hunger Games changed the face of global YA. All three of the Hunger Games original novels have been made into major feature films, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson & Liam Hemsworth The best-selling prequel to The Hunger Games, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, was a global number one feature film in autumn 2023 and a number one New York Times and The Times bestseller in hardback in May 2020. More About Suzanne Collins

Suzanne Collins was writing for children’s television before she sent Gregor beneath New York City. While working on Generation O!, she met James Proimos, who encouraged her to try children’s books. Her reimagining of Alice in Wonderland began with an urban question: what might a child find beneath a manhole instead of a rabbit hole? The answer became The Underland Chronicles.

War connects the Underland to Panem. Collins describes both fictional worlds as places to examine just war theory : who fights, what they believe they are defending, and what violence does to them. The Hunger Games gives those questions to Katniss Everdeen. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes turns toward the young Coriolanus Snow and the political ideas that shape his rise.

In Sunrise on the Reaping, Collins returns to Haymitch Abernathy before the losses that define him in the original trilogy. Writing in his younger voice lets readers experience events as he does, even when they know where his story leads. Beneath these changes of perspective is a structure Collins learned as a playwright : three parts that give her a framework for each novel.

Collaboration brings other voices and images to these stories. Santino Fontana narrates The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes ; Jefferson White’s recording of Sunrise on the Reaping won Audiobook of the Year at the 2026 Audie Awards . Collins also worked with James Proimos on Year of the Jungle , a picture book drawn from her childhood experience of her father’s deployment to Vietnam.
